Exploring the interplay between painting, collage, printmaking and photography, Emerson begins by taking portraits in her studio, often making props and costumes to accompany her models. Screen-prints are then created, often hand painted and delicately embellished with bronze powders and gold leaf and using unusual materials including charcoal powder, ash and saw dust. These textural prints shift the focus of printmaking from precision and replication, to the creation of unique, hand-finished prints. 'Blood Roses' are all uniquely finished, I really enjoyed printing them each was such a surprise as I'd hand painted all the roses first, before the charcoal and bronze powder were added.
