Frances Swigart Steg (b. 1942) is a New Orleans-born painter and printmaker who works mainly in the art of etching. Throughout her five-decade career, Frances has merged the methodical craft of printing with a fearless spontaneity. A master in traditional intaglio etching, she is also known for integrating a range of papers and embellishment techniques. These include printing on hand-marbled papers, water-coloring, gold and aluminum leafing, collage, sewing, and beading. Frances is currently reimagining her archive, creating fresh interpretations from the substantial collection of copper plates that she’s created. Occasionally, she deviates from the original etching. The quick poise drawings (brush and ink) are offered as reproductions. The large triptychs are oil paintings on metal leafed wood.
