Born 1955 London, England. Currently living and working in Wimbledon, South West London. After studying at art college I worked as a graphic designer, and in 1988 started Poole & Rutter, a design agency based in Central London. Following this in 2004, I formed Rutter Associates, my design agency based in Wimbledon. Recently however, I have been working less on commercial graphics projects and concentrating more on producing design and art with the complete freedom to explore whatever visual ideas I wish. My influences and inspiration are varied but I am sure reflect my career as a graphic designer. I like to explore shape, colour, tone, line, contrast, pattern, geometry, typography, grids and layout as well as illusions of light and depth. I often like to take a simple shape or design and get the most out of it I can. This can involve repeating it, changing sizes, overlaying to create new shapes etc, always paying attention to tonal contrasts, colour harmonies (or discords), illusions of scale and depth and the path the eye takes through a picture. After years of experience, designing using computer software comes naturally to me. It allows me to generate lots of ideas and alternatives until I get the result I am searching for. I also enjoy abstract painting and monoprinting which I often incorporate into my digital designs. We all have different tastes in art as well as many other things in life. I hope there will be lovers of visual art out there who will enjoy my creations.
