Original photogravure – this is NOT a mass produced giclée print! “Dahlia for Dale“ is personally hand inked and printed on high quality Somerset Velvet 100% cotton paper by Herman du Toit in a limited edition of 100 prints. Each print carries the artist’s signature and the studio chop mark. Each print also comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity. You can attach this certificate at the back of the print once it is framed. The image was inspired by the work of celebrated glass artist Dale Chihuly who uses this kind of organic iconography as the basis for his work. This is a very fine example of tenebrism (the evocative use of light and shadow) and exemplifies the rich velvety black tones and the wide tonal range unique to photogravure. According to the J. Paul Getty Museum, “photogravure is the most beautiful, challenging, and labor intensive of the traditional photographic processes; it is also among the earliest, dating back to the mid-1800s.” Collecting photogravures is an emerging category of investment in alternative photographic processes. Edward S. Curtis’ epic anthropological study “The North American Indian,” which he printed from 1907-1930, now command prices in the hundreds of thousands for individual prints. Contemporary prints can be had for far less―if you are lucky enough to find one! ready to frame in a white or black frame of your choice. Enjoy!
