About The Artwork

Of Japanese background, Paula was drawn to the traditional Japanese techniques of the art form - Gyotaku - that of making direct prints of underwater sea life. As master printer, she has magnificently blended a fine art training, experience and love of the sea, water and fine Japanese papers, to bring these exclusive prints to the public, some of which have been in personal collections for many years. Her prints have travelled with the Smithsonian Institution throughout Canada, USA and Australia. The "Dorade" is a popular fish found in Europe and this print was created for an event to support the awareness and impact of the Fukushima power plant devastation and the scope of the resulting issues on nature, resources and mankind. This original fish print is professionally matted and framed with a custom dark grey birch wood frame and museum grade glass. Further pictures of the framing can be provided upon request.

Paula grew up in Vancouver, Canada, daughter of a Japanese father and Dutch mother. Informed by West Coast nature, organic forms, water, mountains, often wild landscapes and a parallel study of human machinations, Paula's work is commentary on human condition and conditioning in found environment. Pieces are created as physical experience; works hang, swing, drape, become object, or result is in traditional form. Her work is rooted in exploration, inquiry and curiosity and evolves from flat surface to three dimension or performance dependent on concept and context. Her installations are experiences and participatory.
