Erect I try to stay erect even as the air of my day thickens I try to be the column of the minutes under the pediment. Sometimes my hands get weary But my gaze rejoices I try to stay erect. *** The image is inspired by the poem entitled “Erect” by Cypriot - Bulgarian poet Vasilka Hadjipapa, who also happens to be my mum. It was created as part of a series of illustrations for her latest book “The other side of the Mirror" Or "Parallel Universes" published in 2021 by Publishing House Haini in Sofia, Bulgaria. This is my own version of the translation. This is a cyanotype print of the illustration, created for my solo exhibition, which accompanied the book launch in Nicosia, Cyprus, in November 2021. I chose cyanotype, a vintage medium, usually reserved for photograph prints, because i wanted to give a manual touch and a nostalgic air to the drawings, that were initially created digitally on ipad, using apple pencil and the procreate software.

Sophia Hadjipapa-Gee, is an artist and academic, living in Cyprus. Sophia is Associate Professor at the European University Cyprus and a board member of the Research laboratory “Cultural Studies and Contemporary Arts”. She is also one of the founding members of the International Motion Festival and has been serving at its board from various positions. Besides painting she has worked on video art, interventions in Public spaces, participatory projects, illustrations of poems, covers of books and has been involved in Public art. Her works have been presented in numerous international festivals and exhibitions. She has served in various professional bodies including sitting on the committees for the Selection of Works and Artists for Biennales and serving as academic expert on the committee for composing the New National Curricula in Art, of the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture.
