ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The strange title "Saskatchewan" (1994-1995, 12 color etchings) was subsequently found for the previously unnamed single sheets, which Nussbächer only later combined into a portfolio. This is A.M. dedicated. The American artist Agnes Martin is meant. The artist was born in 1912 in Saskatchewan, the granary of Canada and the area of an old Indian tribe. It was less her minimalist, strictly puristic work that inspired Nussbacher to pay homage to him, but rather the completely withdrawn life of Agnes Martin in the New Mexico desert. The symbolic content of their place of birth gave the portfolio the title. As can be seen from Nußbächer, titles are found objects from reality that affect his lifeblood. The series themselves are independent of these titles - and mostly originated earlier - and are determined by color or formal, stylistic similarities. "Saskatchewan" is - so far - the most colorful of the series. The surface is rhythmized into the lighter tinted red and soft yellow and softens the conflict between black and white. Of all his graphic series, "Saskatchewan" is the most picturesque, the gentlest, also the most poetic. At the same time, line and surface, line strands and forms enter into a multilayered dialogue, because the colors, which are stacked on top of each other, plunge into depth, allow differentiated spatiality, an achievement that benefits the later portfolio "Orbis" (1996). Eva-Suzanne Bayer The portfolio "Saskatchewan" consists of a total of 12 color etchings, 6 sheets in "Saskatchewan 1" and 6 sheets in "Saskatchewan 2" . printmaking Johann Nußbächer was known primarily as a graphic designer. This is by no means because the printmaking in his work is actually the focus. Painting and drawing for several years are, as far as the importance of his work is concerned, equal, at times also priority areas of creation. But as a printmaker, Nussbächer has had the most impact on the public. After graduating from the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt, he taught there for 18 years. In 1975 he founded the "HANPRESSE", probably the most famous Franconian workshop for original graphics, which has remained until today without succession. He trained over 400 students during this time. So it is not exaggerated, Nußbächer as one of the most important foster fathers to name the middle and younger graphic generation. For all the technical perfection and sovereignty that comes with decades of dealing with etching, lithography and even monotype probably inevitably stops, traces of mere craft eloquence, even routine, looking for him in vain. Johann Nussbächer is a German artist, painter, printmaker and draftsman. With national and international exhibitions. His wide work consists of different groups of works of painting, an extensive graphic work as well as "figurative expressive" drawings. His oeuvre has a high density of creation. His most famous paintings are the "works in varnish" The newest painting group is called "Reale Fiction". These pictures look surprisingly three-dimensional, but are actually quite flat and they are exactly like the "work in varnish" unique in the world. Born in the Upper Palatinate near Regensburg, he has been living in a former school in Spessart for over 30 years. In addition to 5 catalogs on his work, there are three television broadcasts about him. The films can be viewed on his homepage:
