As many artists will say, it is at the end of the day when you feel exhausted but want to make just one more work that something happens. Your work goes in directions that you never knew was in your mind and as a result it becomes the most interesting. This is what happened with “Fireworks”. This is printed on Korean Kozu paper - a very strong paper made from the mulberry plant.

I am a Sydney artist using Chinese, Korean and Schmincke inks on yupo paper and canvas. The environment, landscape, emotions and colour all come into play when making these paintings. The influences of Daoism and automatic drawing have been factors in my work. Since completing a Bachelor of Fine Art from National Art School in 2011, I attended a Chinese painting school where I learnt the traditional brush painting techniques of speed, fluidity and tone. The flow of ink on the polypropylene yupo paper makes it a perfect vehicle to produce free flowing, automatic marks. There is a certain amount of control but then unpredictable things can occur when using ink, with the finished work only revealing itself once the ink has dried. Working fast and intuitively, allowing the subconscious to dictate and the emotions to flow, can at times result in all sorts of imagery emerging, including animals, anatomy and landscapes.
