Fale is a traditional Samoan house, being half Samoan I have been enhancing my identity through architecture The term “Paper Architecture” arose from Russian Architects come artists “ Alexander Brodsky and Ilya Utkin”. Frustrated by the dogma communist block building of the 1980’s, they channelled their output into creating a series of monumental etching’s that depicted a fantastic surrealist architectural landscape, wildly opposing the mantra of the regime. These works on paper could only been seen abroad and could never be exhibited in the Soviet Union. I was fortunate to see these etchings in Wellington in the early 1990’s. From seeing these works I became obsessed with cities, skyscrapers, structures and the anti-war will of surrealism. Ever since, my pursuit has been to be a Pacific futurist: furthering patterns, symbols, and structures of our environment. Recently I have been consumed by the geometrics and repetition of Siapo (tapa cloth) patterns, interior fale (traditional Samoan House) roof pattern and fale shape. This body of work explores an open narrative of Pacific influenced patterns and structures with a will to re-imagine towards a new genre and possible future scenarios.

Sheyne Tuffery is a Wellington based Visual Artist who uses a range of art forms to facilitate his visions of Pacific urbanisation. Sheyne received a Bachelor of Visual Arts from AUT in 1995 and his Masters of Fine Arts (honours) in 2000 from The University of Auckland. He is perhaps best known for the dynamic style of his themed woodblock prints of South Pacific Architecture and the Ornithology of Aotearoa .Tuffery describes himself as a paper architect who uses his work to create and represent his own cultural context and sense of belonging. “My art started from the non-identity of my mixed heritage background (Palangi/ Samoan) to evolve into a surrealist vision of South Pacific Patterns, structures, symbols and paper architecture.” His new work explores the fragility of Earth's ecosystems to investigate whether there is spirituality in science.
