A limited edition giclée print of an image painted in 2015. It is hand-signed in pencil, printed onto high quality, Hahnemühle German Etching paper and presented unframed. The size is the same as the original painting of 50cmx70cm but with an additional 3cm blank border area. This painting is a nocturnal scene of city life in downtown Manchester painted with a striking use of colour in a distortive, expressionist style in which the poetic feelings inspired by the view are expressed in an almost symbolist form. The hope is to convey the euphoric vibrancy and beauty of the scene, of the moonlight and the stars, with specific emphasis on the sky as revealed by the expansive openess of the area, giving opportunity for a rich display of swirling purples, violets, indigos and dark blues, juxtaposed with the bright 'lights' of adjacent buildings. The portrayed buildings are a combination of older Victorian, (Midland Hotel and G Mex Conference centre) and modern steel and glass (the Hilton Tower). The image also includes a tram crossing in the foreground to add a sense of metropolitanism and vibrancy. Inspired slightly by Caspar David Friedrich's romantic landscapes, a solitary figure is painted in middle foreground of the scene with his back to the viewer to hopefully further emphasise the panoramic effect of the view with perhaps a twist of moodful isolation added to it therein.

Michael Gutteridge was born in Manchester, Northern England, birthplace of the industrial revolution. I began painting professionally in 2001, when, after submitting a painting in an Open Exhibition at Stockport Art Gallery, I was invited by them to present a full exhibition of 20 paintings the following year. Since then, I've continued to develop and explore my own unique vision which mostly involves trying to capture exciting, vibrant, stimulating or moodful aspects of the urban landscape, especially of my home city of Manchester and its environs. Especially, just lately, at night. I was recently shortlisted as one of the finalists from 12,000 entries for the Aesthetica Creative Arts competition. My images have been used promotionally by the University of Lancaster, the University of Manchester, in pop videos, in magazines, on the covers of books and even made into postcards by the Manchester Tourist Office. They are exhibited regularly in the North of England, and are in private collections around the world.
