About The Artwork

This is a limited edition print image of my neon light work of the same name. NOTE - the print is on paper and does not light up. Signed, numbered. Edition of only 20. 3cm border the whole way around. Archival giclee on Hahnemuehle Photo Rag 308gsm. The neon word "fake" was created in 2015 but after a lot of to-ing and fro-ing I only decided on the background text in 2018, using a quote from the undercover video of the (then) Cambridge Analytica boss who made the statement "It doesn't have to be true. It just has to be believed". This was the perfect text for the theme. Final statement/question is my own, a reference to experts often being cast aside in favour of reports and "news" disseminated via social media - what you know can actually drive you mad if no-one is listening/you are crowded out by the "fake" news. I released the finished light up neon piece in March/April 2018 and the print has been released in July 2018. The light up neon sits on a brushed aluminium background, which has a mirror like effect albeit one in which the viewer cannot see clearly - perfect for the concept. The print also conveys some of this effect as you can see some of the light reflected. PRINTS DO NOT LIGHT UP - THEY ARE 2D IMAGES.

"Rebecca's work is an extraordinary mix of truth and beauty; she is able to engage her audience with brutal observations about life, love, money and culture with her simple, honest and often humorous interpretation of the modern world" (Laura Lea, curator) Rebecca Mason, often working under the pseudonym "Rococo Wonderland", is an artist using light to convey the darkness within human life, existence and emotion. This is often accompanied by a dry, self-deprecating sense of humour and candid confessions aimed at recognising and accepting our imperfections. Neon, with its seedy connotations and consumerist lure, is the brush she uses to create a gritty and simultaneously delicate world. Her inspiration is drawn from the exciting, chaotic playground of the city in which she lives. The living metropolis of London, with all its fears, questions and realisations emerge in her work via a duplicity of textual phrases and fragile luminosity. The aim is to encourage the viewer to engage, share her world and illuminations as well as identify a little of themselves and their own experiences in the work. The premise for each piece of work usually begins by referencing a feeling or event in her personal life, a micro moment in her existence which is then broadened to reflect the theme on a macro, collective, basis.
