This work is inspired by a trip to the coast in England this summer where a friend lives. The homes, sunlit on that day, were reminiscent of an ideal from numerous cultures. It brought to mind travels in numerous places including Cornwall and also the US and Australia. I am interested in playing with pared back underlying shapes and colours to enable the cutting of a series of woodcut plates, which could still create the sense of place. The process I am using is Mokuhanga, Japanese woodblock. I use Shina plywood, and wood cutting knives/chisels to make a series of blocks. For some I also cut shapes using a fret saw. I print these by hand using a baren, a circular disc of bamboo, and watercolour brushed onto the block, printing onto mulberry (kozo) paper. This is usually done in many layers, where colours and textures can be played with. As a result, using this responsive process, the prints are individual, and vary slightly, and are therefore unique. This print is made from 6 blocks and is printed on Hosho paper. I've included a couple of images of the blocks.
