Biography - Renate Riess 1940 born in Rabenstein near Chemnitz 1946-54 primary school in Rabenstein 1954-61 apprenticeship as merchandising designer and work in the same profession 1961-77 freelance work in the area of fair and exhibition design 1977-88 artistic collaborator at the district cabinet for cultural activities in Karl-Marx-Stadt, variously responsible for painting and graphic art, carving/wood and exhibition design, since 1970 artistic instructor for children, young people, adults and senior citizens 1991-2000 1993-2001 and since 2002 Studio head of the"Atelier im Leimtopf" e.V. (“Studio in the Gluepot” registered association), now "Atelier 8-80" e.V. (“Studio 8-80” registered association) Freelance painter and graphic artist and design work together with her husband, Joachim Riess. Artist’s statement My watercolours are created predominantly on location outdoors; the colour woodcuts at home, based on my watercolours. A holiday without a sketch pad and box of paints is inconceivable to me; just lost time. Thus I create landscapes and floral works to bring pleasure to myself and others after the holiday is over. Each page is an episode of my life and has a story to tell, so it is difficult for me to part with any of them. But, unfortunately, good paper, brushes and quality paints don’t come for free.
