ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Op- Shop Glaze is based on 2 vases I found in an antique store, whose glaze I tried to replicate through watercolour and gouache. This was an exploration in glazing techniques I don't often find in contemporary ceramics, which are disrupted through the inclusion of terracotta and underglaze as pattern over the top. The Terracotta Collage series is made up of 7 images each editioned out of 5 through high quality Gyclee print on A3 Ilford Textured cotton rag, 310 gsm. This series uses a process of composting past work to create refined archives through collage. These assemble many mediums including watercolour, gouache, pen, and coloured pencil as well as physical ceramics to construct vessels that transcend a single textural materiality and tactility. Collages and physical ceramics informed each other during their making, as well as the forms and colours of work from previous years. The background’s of these collages were created using a method of hand-making paper from recycled proof prints, separating and mixing the coloured printed ink into batches of paper to create new colour combinations and textures which were then digitised and informed the imagery of each collage. Each Gyclee print is signed and numbered out of 5.

Elizabeth Lewis works in expanded ceramics; an area for her made up of ceramics, painting, and printmaking that meet through collage and sculpture. Textural anomalies form the basis of her work across these mediums. She is particularly interested in how collage can inform other practices materially, explored through the strong silhouettes of ceramic forms.
