this handprinted original serigraph (#144/150) depicts the 'Workhorse of the North...' the float-equipped De Havilland Beaver. The landscape below the plane is inspired by the McKenzie River in Northern Canada. About our process: This image went through a number of stages, sketches and studies to compile into the full size “master drawing” , from which many different stencils were prepared by the artists (Liz and Hal). Each imprint requires some time to set up, register, add oil paints to the screen, blend, consider the color and the gradation, and when satisfactory, then screen that color onto all the sheets of rag paper. (We typically started with 50 sheets of paper, which allows leeway for experimenting, and does not take too long for each imprint.) there is always clean-up too. In that way, we could sometimes do several color imprints in one day. It generally goes from printing large areas that set the tone, to gradually more detailed imprints to set the realistic feel of our work. But there is an unmistakable quality to a piece of art that is made in this medium. Each serigraph of “Out of the Sun” has 29 imprints, a process which we did over a period of weeks. When we (the artists) felt the work was finished, we signed and numbered those pieces. ( there is no other "original"... the silk-screening has created the art, not copied something else .) Also , entire editions are not usually made at one time, so there are variations in the editions, state I, II, III often, which is the case with Out of the Sun. This piece is State IV and quite different than State I !
