Hello. Thank you for your interest! My studio is located in Islamorada, Florida—which is a skinny, remote island chain in the middle of the ocean, just north of Key West, Florida. If you haven't been here, you have to visit, we are often referred to as "America's Caribbean."

The linocuts in this collection, "A Line Around Your Thoughts," are representative of the two year period following the loss of my mother, and then immediately after, the loss of my home and belongings in Hurricane Irma. The art tells a story of love, survival, resiliency, and finding my way back home in the dark. I see the collection together as a mono-myth, or hero's journey (as told by Joseph Campbell). Each piece is represents a step in my journey.

**These are original, hand-inked and hand-pulled, numbered editions of 10. I sell them at galleries in addition to this online forum, so the number you will be receiving is likely different than the number on the art in the representative photo. Please contact me if you would like to know the exact edition number you will be receiving.

Each of my prints are hand-drawn and then hand-carved (in negative) on a linoleum block. Once the block is carved I roll it with ink and press the paper to the wet block using a traditional Japanese baren.

No two pieces are alike. The markings and imperfections that transfer to the page in the pressing process are celebrated as part of the linocut esthetic.

The centuries old linocut technique is often associated with street or outsider art, and has a rich history that gained momentum when Picasso embraced the medium in the 1950's.

Size: 18" x 18" inches

Paper: Masa White Handmade Washi Paper: Crisp, bright white paper with deckled edges. Do not confuse this paper with the light weight or waxed Masa commonly sold in the U.S. This paper is more like a heavy Hosho that has been sized for use with water-based inks. It is thick and tough but retains a soft touch to it.

What is Washi?
Washi is distinguished from modern commercial paper, even high quality art paper, by being made entirely by hand, using traditional methods, in small isolated villages in Japan.

Valerie Perreault is a visual artist and poet. Born into a military family in New Jersey, she grew up in Wisconsin and Illinois. She graduated from the Art Institute, worked in Austin and Boston, lived some years aboard a sailboat, and has settled in the Florida Keys. In 2016, while living aboard her sailboat on an island just north of Key West she opened a small art gallery in a sandy wood shack about 100 steps from the ocean. It was called Portside Gallery (she's left handed and the port side is the left side of a boat). It was there that she began selling her block prints to locals and lost tourists. She sold the gallery in 2020 but her art continues to grow and lives on in private collections across the globe. Her work has been featured in GOOP, Hia Magazine, Buzzfeed and PBS Art Loft, among others. She also has permanent installations in high-end resorts and public spaces including The South Beach Ritz Carlton, Tommie Austin, Intercontinental Miami, Casa Marina Resort Key West, Hotel St. Elm, Hawks Cay Resort, the Port of San Diego, Parkline Miami, and on Royal Caribbean's, Star of the Seas. Also, about two times a year, she shows her new works at art galleries. The old Portside shack is still there, and owned now by a friend who carries and sells her work for returning vacationers who want to rediscover the secret gem in the palm trees. Perreault is the winner of the 2024 Richard Snyder Prize in Poetry and her book, Neon Pastoral, will be published in late 2025.
