About The Artwork

Notes on the Roma Series The “Roma” Series expresses my fascination with this ancient city based on my experience visiting and studying it. These prints use the techniques of intaglio, photogravure, and chine collé. The sepia-toned ink with the photo process has a textured and grainy appearance, suggesting both aging and history. Both prints utilize a collage-like juxtaposition of photographic elements, applied hand-colored paper, and in Roma Due, drawing. The source images include Palazzo Barberini, the Pantheon, Villa Giulia, and the Trevi Fountain. Classical architecture and perspective views remind one of the enduring architectural past that provides the framework of the modern city, and invite you to think about issues of culture and the process of change through time. The profile element in Roma Uno is a self-portrait.

Lives and works near Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Lecturer at Kansas City Art Institute Each work begins with an experience or perception, and strives for a revelation of that experience. To accomplish this I take bits of the observed natural world and re-arrange them, re-color them, and re-shape them until they resonate with a satisfying energy and sense of balance. I am interested in circles as organizing principle, metaphor, and visual structure, which has led me to explore mandalas. I am also intrigued by implying progression in the fourth dimension, time, within a static image. The inherently abstract quality of music informs the way I think visually. Color and music overlap in my mind, creating wordless joy. The visual worlds I invent are ultimately metaphors for spiritual perceptions. I believe that art can be a powerful healing force, supporting and uplifting the spirit of both the maker and the viewer, and I am gratified that my work has been helpful to people in this way in healthcare and private settings.
