My current body of work deals with personal cross-cultural experience. I used to refuse to call my apartment here in the U.S. “home”. However, throughout the years, I realized that my concept of “home” is not based on either geographical locale or physical possessions. My nostalgia comes from the people met along the way. Each place that I move, people remind me of home, and what’s more, they bring out part of me that I haven’t even met yet. In Bell Hooks’ Belong: a culture of place, she mentioned: “This is what the experience of exile can do, change your mind, utterly transform one’s perception of the world of home.” In my current series “Finding the Way Home”, I chose a few universal symbols such as rocks, hermit crabs, or origami paper boats, reconstructing these objects and placing them into suggested environments. I want to give the audience a different view of the idea of, and our individual journeys to, “home.”
