A moody and mysterious aquatint etching. This atmospheric etching captures a view across water, towards gently rising hills receding into the distance. It catches the moment when the light of morning is just peeping over the land on the right hand side. The cool blues and greys of this moody start to the day are warmed by the warm gold across the water and touch of pink in the left hand corner, hinting at the day to come. To create this etching I have used a zinc plate, aquatint (melting resin onto the plate with a flame, creating raised 'mounds' that allow the acid to sink into the plate. This in turn, creates a surface for the ink to 'grip'), litho crayon, ammonia, chalk, acid and burnishing. The professional etching ink is smeared onto the plate and gently removed, with some ink deliberately left to create the atmospheric sky. This image is created by placing the inked plate on the bed of an etching press, with a sheet of damp 'Somerset' heavy weight, white paper on top. The press is then hand 'wound', pressing the plate and paper together, transferring the image onto the paper. This artwork is part of a 'variable edition' of only 25 prints from this etching plate. A variable edition is when there is a variation in inking/colours for each print, therefore each artwork created is totally unique. This piece is the first of the series and numbered 2/25 (please see photographs). It is signed, titled and numbered on the front. Paper size 57 x 38cm Image (plate) size 39.5 x 25cm This print will be sent wrapped in tissue and rolled in a sturdy cardboard tube. Artwork comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.

Lizzie Butler is an expressive, semi abstract artist, who works in a contemporary style in oil. Her strong spatial awareness and a passion for working en plein air, inform her practice and lead to paintings that recreate the intangible atmosphere found in landscapes and the peaceful silence of nature. Most of her paintings are begun outside and completed in her London studio. Although working primarily in oil, Lizzie also enjoys the physicality of exploring etching with zinc and steel plates, to create intaglio prints. Lizzie Butler's artwork has been exhibited at Leighton House Museum, Kensington, London, The Russell Gallery, London, and several other Galleries. Lizzie's paintings can be found in collections in America, New Zealand, the UK and across Europe, with several customers returning to buy further paintings and place commissions.
