About The Artwork

A limited edition giclée print of an image painted over many years and finished in 2014. It is hand-signed in pencil, printed onto high quality, Hahnemühle German Etching paper and presented unframed. The size is the same as the original painting of 50cmx70cm but with an additional 2cm blank border area. This painting is of an iconic Victorian pub/tavern in Manchester named the Lass O' Gowrie after an old Scottish poem written by Lady Carolina Nairne. I was attracted to painting it because it oozed character and because of the beautiful bronze coloured ceramic tiling and general striking colourfulness and the way it stands alone and is juxtaposed against an old industrial landscape behind it. It was painted with a bold use of colour in a distortive, expressionist style in which the feelings inspired by the view are expressed in an almost symbolist form. To add a slightly surrealistic element, an aura of strangeness, the entire scene was painted on top of an abstract expressionist mass of colour which was retained to show through via the windows and in some of the figures in the foreground. It is a celebration of colour to reflect the general aura of celebration associated with pubs and taverns, and hopefully it instils an added emotional vibrancy to the overall scene. Some of the figures in the foreground reflect the atmosphere of history and heritage associated with the pub, that was once in an area known as 'Little Ireland' where many Irish immigrants settled to work in the nearby cotton mills during the 18th & 19th century. Indeed, co-author and friend of Karl Marx, Frederick Engels visited and wrote extensively about the area during that time and possibly even called in the pub.

Michael Gutteridge was born in Manchester, Northern England, birthplace of the industrial revolution. I began painting professionally in 2001, when, after submitting a painting in an Open Exhibition at Stockport Art Gallery, I was invited by them to present a full exhibition of 20 paintings the following year. Since then, I've continued to develop and explore my own unique vision which mostly involves trying to capture exciting, vibrant, stimulating or moodful aspects of the urban landscape, especially of my home city of Manchester and its environs. Especially, just lately, at night. I was recently shortlisted as one of the finalists from 12,000 entries for the Aesthetica Creative Arts competition. My images have been used promotionally by the University of Lancaster, the University of Manchester, in pop videos, in magazines, on the covers of books and even made into postcards by the Manchester Tourist Office. They are exhibited regularly in the North of England, and are in private collections around the world.
