About The Artwork

From "The Solace of Antiquity" series. The Northeast Corner of the Parthenon, The Acropolis, Athens, Greece. Classical antiquity is omnipresent in Greece, woven into the cultural legacy of the country physically, psychologically and intellectually. It is an immense, epic, unavoidable, and at times, mysterious presence, mostly manifest through its architecture. This drawing project, started in July 2019, explores the themes of omnipresence, permanence/impermanence, and solace. While now monochrome, the architectural elements of the Parthenon were once imbued with bright colors. Over time they became bleached under the Aegean sun but still show in sharp relief. To me this building more than any other from classical antiquity, codifies a universal architectural language known the world over in which the parts inform the whole and vice versa. This view, due to the nature of this language, while showing only a fragment, implies the whole. This drawing is a composite based on field sketches and photos taken in July 2019.
