Almost more lush and saturated than many of his classic market paintings, "The Red Raincoat" is a slice of life from Spain, and an example of why Clark Hulings said he often preferred overcast conditions for painting rich colors. The red awning that says "Teresa Galan" pulls you in, and you see the merchant just under it, reaching across to her yellow flowers with a forest of green ferns under her work table. The people walking in the rain are as varied and colorful as the flowers themselves, with women in orange and blue coats, and couples walking with umbrellas in lilac, pink, blue, yellow, and green. But most notable? That bright, almost white reflection of the rain on the ground. Lean in and see the detail of the sheen of the water, the reflected colors, and the outlines of the cobblestones. This is a piece that reminds us of how beautiful a grey day can be. Printed on paper in limited editions and signed.

Clark Hulings (1922-2011) was born in Florida and raised in New Jersey. Over his lifetime, he resided in New York, Louisiana, and throughout Europe before settling in Santa Fe in 1972. Clark’s ability to see beauty in daily human gestures and activities won him the appellation “master” on numerous occasions. His celebration of textures as expressed through light, shadow, and atmosphere “describes the air itself,” according to the Christian Science Monitor. His range of subject matter was astonishing, “No one does as many things as well,” proclaimed Southwest Art. His modesty in the face of such acclaim was legendary. Throughout his career he maintained a personal profile far lower than his national reputation.
