These tall, tarred “net shops” at Hastings, East Sussex, form a distinctive part of the working beach, used to provide a weatherproof store for fishing gear. Limited space on the shingled beach led to the sheds growing upwards. Windowless and closely huddled together they take on the character of a Morandi still life and the horizontal lines of the weatherboarding create an abstract geometric patterning.
