In compiling his famous star catalog (completed in 129 BCE), the Greek astronomer Hipparchus noticed that the positions of the stars were shifted in a systematic way from earlier Babylonian (Chaldean) measures. This indicated that it was not the stars that were moving but rather the observing platform, Earth. Such a motion is called precession and consists of a cyclic wobbling in the orientation of Earth’s axis of rotation with a period of 25,772 years. Precession was the third-discovered motion of Earth, after the far more obvious daily rotation and annual revolution. Precession is caused by the gravitational influence of the Sun and the Moon acting on Earth’s equatorial bulge. To a much lesser extent, the planets exert influence as well.

Nature derives a strength and economy of form from geometry, its patterns are observed everywhere in the natural world, from molecular structures to planetary systems. In contemplating the interrelationships of planes and colour I find that the universal language of geometry and mathematics provide me with a set of rules or guiding principles. I find inspiration fundamentally in nature, and hope through using the tools and materials at my disposal to extract a kind of distillation and fix in physical form a thing that otherwise remains hidden. I’m inspired by the prospect of inventing forms and pictures for which there are no other means of expression and for which words are inadequate to describe. Being an artist and producing works of Art can sometimes feel like inhabiting that realm shared by the alchemist chasing an elusive target: searching for that rarefied object using mere sticks and mud, wood and glue and coloured powders.
