This woodcut is inspired by so called soundmirrors. There still exist some remains of these uge concrete "sculptures" which were built on the south and northeast coasts of England between 1916 and the 1930s in order to provide early warning of incoming enemy aeroplanes and airships about to attack coastal towns..
