With this work I intend to establish aesthetic links between Mesoamerican art, modern abstract painting -in its geometric aspect- and color field painting. This piece is part of a series inspired by the Mayan Stelae located in the archaeological sites of Calakmul and Cobá. Originally the stelae recounted the most important political and historical events of the Mayan cities, in this case I make a reinterpretation based on an abstract language that focuses on the formal features of these monuments such as: graphics, reliefs and textures that the ancient artists carved into blocks of stone which they eventually covered with brightly colored paint. In my case, I also use bright colors but typical of the current era, such as fluorescent and metallic colors.

My name is Valentina Olmedo, I am a painter, architect and teacher of painting and drawing at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking "La Esmeralda" in Mexico City. My artwork is focused on painting, drawing and design, disciplines in which I deal with architectural themes that go from landscape to abstraction. Since 2016 I have been developing the concepts "pictorial architectures" and "sculptural paintings" which combines painting, graphic resources, geometry and trompe l'oeil on irregular formats that often have reliefs and openings. My paintings also result of my training as an architect, in the sense they resemble architectonic models and the way I represent forms and spaces. In addition, I take many elements from the ancient and contemporary architecture.
