A black hole is an extremely dense object whose gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape it. A black hole is invisible. It only shows itself indirectly: By the accretion of matter onto the black hole, by the movement of nearby stars, by gravitational waves when two black holes collide. Working on this project I wanted to try and get a feeling of the dimensions of a black hole. In three steps I show how to calculate what the size of Earth’s Schwarzschild radius would be if it were a black hole: 9 mm. Earth’s mass would have to be squeezed in a sphere with a diameter of 18 mm. This tile shows the third calculation: On the left is the formula and on the right is an image of a small black dot: The size of the Schwarzschild Radius of the Earth, scale 1:1

The longing for the landscape of my youth has been a source of inspiration for my work for years: The flat land near the North Sea on the edge of the continent. Themes such as the Dutch Landscape, the ship, water, wind, clouds, movement represent this nostalgia. In recent years my focus has been on a different theme. I have been interested in astronomy since high school, but only now I found time to study and attend lectures on physics and astronomy. There was a certain logic to me in visualizing this learning process in ceramics, the material I’ve been working with for more than 40 years. My aim is to show the beauty of logic and science. Since 2020 I have been working on the series “Notes on Matter and Antimatter”. These are ceramic tiles that you can think of as the pages of a workbook. I have explored topics in physics and astronomy, for example: Bubble chamber photos showing the movements of subatomic particles. I am currently working on another project: April 8 2024, I was in Texas for the total solar eclipse. The photos I took will be used in my next project: 2024 Great American Eclipse.
