I'm a wood-based artist and a writer. As an undergrad, I focused mainly on ceramic and mixed-media sculpture. After that, I studied art history and ended up with a PhD on German Expressionism and other art from the early 20th Century, and have since published articles and books on modernist art. For a couple of decades I taught fine art at Cardiff School of Art, focusing on art theory and studio practice (mainly photography and mixed-media, which I've exhibited internationally), and recently I stopped teaching so I could explore ways of bringing the photography, history and sculpture together to feed into the making of one-off pieces from wood. My current practice is an exploration of certain strands of modernist art, especially key concepts in the writings of Wassily Kandinsky, played out in a sculptural language that draws on various modern traditions. I work from a shared workshop here in Cowbridge, South Wales, UK.
