I am inspired by Richard Sera, and his large scale sculptures that you can physically walk into to experience. I chose steel for the inside of Alchemy 3 and promoted the rust for it's warmth, richness in color and raw qualities, and I chose the galvanized steel for the exterior as a contrast, showing two opposite attributes of one type of metal. I specifically chose perforated steel because I've been a photographer for 27 years, and light and shadow play a big role in that medium for me. I wanted to create a sculpture that played with light as well, and I found the patterns created in the shadows and on the actual piece brought a whimsical, interactive quality to the sculpture and experience of it overall.
