Twagirumukiza's artwork, crafted from cardboard and plaster, reinterprets the legendary Ashanti doll with a contemporary vision. This powerful symbol of fertility and protection in Ghana's Ashanti culture is reimagined with a broad, circular face, simplified features, and stylized proportions. The sculpture embodies the fusion of tradition and modernity, revealing the artist's ability to transcend material limitations and capture the spiritual essence of his subjects. According to legend, Ashanti dolls were carried on the backs of women in the hope of promoting fertility. These sacred objects, beyond their protective function, embodied hope and future life, transmitting both blessings and cultural heritage. In Twagirumukiza's version, this symbolism is preserved, yet enriched with a raw and modern aesthetic, where simple, refined materials emphasize form and concept. The necklaces of brown and black seeds, carefully arranged around the doll's neck, remind us of the importance of natural elements and our connection to the earth and the universe—a central theme in Twagirumukiza's work. These elements beautifully contrast with the pure white of the plaster, perhaps symbolizing the duality of life and spirit, or the coexistence of past and present. With this piece, Twagirumukiza goes beyond merely replicating the Ashanti doll; he breathes new life and momentum into it, where ancestral magic meets the artist's unique and bold vision. It is a celebration of tradition, seen through the lens of a modern sensibility, inviting both contemplation and reflection on our own connection to cultural and spiritual heritage.

🇬🇧 Passionate about sculpture and painting, I developed my own technique in a self-taught way. I started to exhibit my works to the public during my law studies at the Panthéon Sorbonne University, where I discovered the pleasure of sharing my artistic vision. In 2004, after obtaining my law degree, I deepened my knowledge of sculpture at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. Back in France, I continued to train at the Ateliers des Beaux Arts de the city of Paris in 2015, while continuing my artistic creation. I sculpt with different mediums: wood, clay, stone, paper. I let the final shape of the work reveal itself through the sculpting process. I compose my works with several objects, sometimes sculpted at different times. I assemble them harmoniously to express an idea, a feeling, a movement or a sound.
