About The Artwork

This sculpture belongs to Norman Gekko's “Beehives” series. For this sculpture, Gekko selected recovered items belonging to our everyday universe which meticulously arranged and sprayed a uniform golden colour. Through this act of spraying the objects are ascribed to a kind of ‘golden age ‘ – whereby the artist’s later treatment of the objects can be viewed as an attempt to save them from destruction and disappearance; symbolically providing them a form of duration and permanence. “I take great pleasure in transforming the everyday detritus of our lives into something aesthetically beautiful. For me the ‘Beehives’ series represent the intrinsic obsolescence of our existence and a desire to preserve the past and the present” - Norman Gekko, 2017 A miscellany of childhood toys, obsolete electrical components alongside discarded utilitarian and personal items; Gekko’s Beehives rail against the modern world’s preoccupation with material accumulation and the relentless assault by information, images, sounds and other stimuli, which render our psychological-self paralysed and impotent. This sculpture is mounted and framed and signed on the reverse by the artist. A certificate of authenticity signed by the artist is provided with the work.

Contemporary artist Norman Gekko delights in parodying the hypocrisy and excesses of western culture. Most often, Gekko produces multiple individual pieces of work as part of a series (inbred series, Beehives, Paper balls etc); willingly and enthusiastically generating new works with intensity, until exhausting both the subject and the artist.
