It’s hard for me to believe but I started this sculpt 4 years ago at a very definitive point in my life when I was searching for ways to reinvest in my personal art. It has a great deal of personal meaning for me as I really struggled with an expressive drought that lasted nearly a decade. There were projects I had worked on for clients through the years that seemed like cool subjects but the art direction and decision making always failed to resonate with me. So I started this project as a way of shedding the dead weight of those feelings. I have spent enough time noodling, finessing, and iterating on her. So Im releasing her in to the wild.

My attempt here is not to portray Medusa as we have come to know her in the popular sense. A watered down Hollywood monster. An over simplified man hating Gorgon with a deadly gaze.
My effort is to encompass a woman in a terrible and vulnerable state of transition. This being captured in the moment of transformation between woman and myth. An oft maligned being who’s beauty and power were used against her in a fit of jealousy.
Like Medusa how frequently we find ourselves in similar states of transition. Acted on by forces beyond our control. Often malignantly. Our shared human experience is one of change. For better or worse. And so here our Medusa represents this shift.

She is a resin statue standing 17.5” tall. The figure itself is 13” tall or approximately 1/6 scale. She is painted with acrylics and gold wax. Each statue being assembled and painted by myself. She will come mounted on a marble base and will include a certificate of authenticity. Edition of ten.
