Russell Hill b. 1988, Midlands, UK Living and working in London The work responds to selected contemporary objects in a playful, yet carefully constructed, methodical manner. Whilst retaining the original function of the object Hill physically intervene to begin a visual inquiry into cultural systems and consumer dialogues. He uses simple aesthetic decisions to create poetic associations and connections between commercial objects, whilst questioning the temporality and obsolescence of consumer products. Often striping objects of imagery to enhance a minimal and ambiguous appearance, which supports the idea of mass production. He references popular culture, 1960s minimalism and varying anthropological studies, which weave with many visual strategies. He is currently basing his inquiry on the increasing dialogue between innovation and the art object. For example, National Geographic and its progression through contemporary culture and the effect this has had on its innovation as a commercial brand. The livid green of laundry detergent, the sensual efficiency of a chrome Airwick - this is the palette Hill accentuates for his considered, and thoroughly engaging works.
