About The Artwork

Box sculpture: architecture in miniature; in materials of reclaimed-antiques. Frame work (soft wood) and columns are antique salvage, surrealistically contrasting with a 1:24 miniature interior, which somehow recalls the arches of Cathedrals. The upstairs and downstairs are connected with an attic opening, via a tall ladder. A spot light shines through this opening, giving a shadow effect of the ladder, and illuminating theatrical, crumbling elegance. A foxed antique mirror in the background reflects this light effect. Upstairs, there is a golden sphere. It is for you to read any symbolism you like, into all of these props !! This architectural interior recalls traces of memory from long ago. Dust covered; the occasional spider's web... Mixed medium: reclaimed soft wood, foxed antique mirror. The light-fitting (220-240 volts) comes as a euro-plug AC adaptor, which may be converted to follow the electrical system of the country of purchase. Two secure hanging brackets are installed on the back.

Born in the Netherlands in 1937. His parents dealt in antiques and the family lived in an old house that inspired the artist from his earliest years on.After finishing his art studies he found himself in the world of theatre and television as a set-designer. Besides, he started to create his first 'boxes'.These were exhibited in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, Paris and New York during the ninetiesAfter he settled in France he spends most of his time and energy in changing the interior of his 18th century manor house that now reflects in many ways the three dimensional interiors of his box-sculptures.These in no way resemble doll houses. His boxes have an atmosphere of the past, theatrical crumbling elegance with a strong 'dust and spider' trend.
