"Buddha Buddha Buddha (Waiting for the Rain)" Sculpture

S O P H I E F I S H E L 's body of work often features some variety of humour and is essentially an exploration into the human condition; the way we interact, our culture and relationships, our use of language, movement and the way we choose to dress. Humour lacks the confinements of social expectations and in her opinion laughing is one of the most liberal, infectious and impulsive actions a human being can take. Her sculpture, installation and films explore a contemporary and eclectic range of media and encompasses broad preoccupations ranging from characterisation, costume, the absurdity of consumerism, the mundane and the abject, to subtle observations of everyday life. According to artist John Isaac the way we live is 'modern, fast-track, hi-flying, giga-byted, money-making, stock-inflating, a broadway-boogie-woogie world that is also a fast-food guzzling, consumer- driven, resource-eating, air-polluting, earth-poisoning, a prozac-popping monster that has run out of control'; Sophie Fishel often uses this statement as a starting point to navigate her work into a social critique of our current, modern day society.
