About The Artwork

This piece is inspired by the black bulls of the Camarge in southern France. During my time as an apprentice guardian (cowgirl) on a working farm in the Camarge I learned how to herd and manage the farm's prize herd of black bulls. These small, feisty beasts are bred for their meat and to participate in the traditional Course Camargue games, a bloodless spectator sport. This unique figurine is handcarved from sweetchestnut. I planted a sweetchestnut tree in my front garden almost fifteen years ago. It quickly outgrew its space and shaded the rest of the garden from vital light. This year I began pruning the larger lower branches and used the wood to make a series of carved figurines. I work with a small whittling knife to shape the wood. The sculpture is finished with milk paint and beeswax. It has been mounted on a hardwood plinth. I am keen to make sustainable artwork using locally sourced, environmentally friendly, renewable materials.

I am a third generation artist and maker. My grandfather was a stone carver and my father worked with wood. As a visual artist my work spans several disciplines from sculpture to photography and recently, printmaking. Art came late into my life, in the early days I thought about a career in law and studied it and history at University College Galway. Wanderlust beckoned and I spent six years working and living on ocean racing yachts. In 2000 I returned to Ireland and studied photography at Griffith College Dublin with the intention of finding work as a travel/documentary photographer. However, the creative aspects of the medium captivated me and I went on to explore historic photographic equipment and processes - wet plate collodion, cyanotypes and cameraless image making. In 2013 I completed a Masters degree in Fine Art at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin. I have exhibited in solo and group shows nationally and internationally and have won several visual arts awards including: the Thomas Dammann Jr Award 2018, the Golden Fleece Award in 2011, and the Artlinks Award in 2009.  I am currently writing and illustrating a book - The Waters and the Wild -  about my kayaking journey through Ireland.
