About The Artwork

Baking powder tin, hose connectors, small funnels, knives, forks, nut picks, tea ball, sawtooth hanger, doll eyes, wingnuts. Cal was born in Illinois, the youngest son of the Mayor of Calumet City, right on the Illinois-Indiana border. Despite his father’s pride in his hometown, Cal describes it as “a great place to be from” and left as soon as he graduated high school. He attended the Culinary Institute of America and learned to ski in the Catskill Mountains. Despite being a flatlander, he quickly mastered the new sport, and was skiing black diamonds in no time. He met his girlfriend (now wife) on the slopes; she was from Martha’s Vineyard, and when he visited her, he fell in love with both her and the island. Meanwhile he graduated from the Culinary Institute with a degree in Baking and Pastry Arts, learning the techniques, ingredient function, and design principles behind everything from puff pastry to baguettes to entremets. His specialty was an amazing Apple Fritter, which people seemed to become addicted to! They decided Martha’s Vineyard was the ideal location, as they could take off for the entire ski season. Cal is now somewhat of a celebrity on the island, as his Apple Fritters are the star of the menu at Back Door Donuts!

David Joseph is an artist, physician, engineer and inventor who lives on Martha’s Vineyard and in Naples, Florida. As an artist, David’s primary media are found object art and photography. An avid international traveler, he has visited over 120 countries on all seven continents, all 50 states, and over 250 UNESCO world heritage sites, each destination an opportunity to photograph nature, wildlife, and portraits. Unable to travel during Covid, David saw the potential to create art from the mundanity around him. He began to create found object sculptures made of old or used common household items, toys, and sports equipment. Each whimsical, thought-provoking piece displays the balanced composition of a trained artist and the skilled construction of an engineer.
