About The Artwork

The Royal Ballet and Michael Talbot 2014 saw the start of an exciting collaboration between Michael Talbot and The Royal Ballet. The first two pieces are launched in early 2015 with a wonderful portrait sculpture of The Royal Ballet’s Principal dancer, Edward Watson and an elegant portrayal of a dancing ballerina, which Michael has called ‘Callisto’. “I see this is the beginning of a dialogue between sculpture and dance that allows me to work with artists of the highest calibre from The Royal Ballet. Both art forms are trying in many ways to achieve the same thing - Ballet through awe inspiring training and discipline that transcends the physical limitations of the body, and with sculpture the fixed physical limitations of the material in space. We are both focused on making art works that are in the world but in some way not of the world, that are in the simplest sense, breaking bounds." Michael Talbot ‘Callisto’ ‘Callisto’ is the first of Michael’s works to be launched in the collaboration between Michael Talbot and the The Royal Ballet. Michael has chosen the name ‘Callisto’ as a tribute to the wonderfully talented Jeanetta Laurence, the Associate Director of the Royal Ballet who was awarded an OBE for services to dance in the New Year’s Honours List of 2014. Michael says “I was extremely privileged to have had Jeanetta’s input in the final stages of creating this piece. To have received the advice and technical input of a woman as experienced and successful as Jeanettta in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of this dance study was indeed a pleasure and an honour.”
