ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspired by the works of Eric Nado and Ravi Zupa, Chicago Typewriter reimagines the components of a vintage typewriter, transforming them into the shape of an assault rifle. This piece parallels the power of words and the force of weapons. The name, a historical reference to the Tommy gun, carries dual significance: during the Prohibition era, the rapid-fire sound of the gun was likened to the clacking keys of a typewriter. By repurposing the typewriter—a communication tool —into the form of a weapon, the artwork reflects the duality of language and violence. Each part has been carefully disassembled and reassembled to highlight the typewriter's mechanical beauty while also provoking thought about the intersection of creativity and destruction. The contrast invites viewers to ponder how the written word, like a weapon, can shape history, for better or worse. The piece aims to evoke contemplation about the fragile balance between dialogue and conflict in modern society. The materials—plastic, steel, and aluminum—are sourced from a vintage Hermes typewriter, blending nostalgic elements with an industrial aesthetic. The piece showcases the raw physical texture of exposed screws and aged metal, reflecting the durability of both machines and the ideas they symbolize. Chicago Typewriter comes ready to be installed, complete with hanging hardware.

I am passionate about repurposing everyday objects and giving them new life through art. My work often blends various media, combining unexpected elements to create pieces that challenge perceptions of form and function. I enjoy exploring how discarded or overlooked items can be transformed into meaningful statements, bridging the gap between industrial design and creative expression.
