About The Artwork
Sculptor Theo Shields has collaborated with Fraser Waugh from Edinburgh Cast-Metals and carpenter Chris Scotland to produce a series of sculptures in native hardwoods and recycled metal. Oak and Iron is a study on the impact of molten metal on the form and integrity of wood. The completed sculptures are made from casts taken from the inner cavity of fire-hollowed logs; as hot iron is poured into a slab of oak, the iron and wood reject each other, burning and bending until fusing as one. The end product is ultimately a conversation between these two raw materials.

Studied at Edinburgh College of Art (2011-14) Queensland College of Art, Australia (2012-13). and Art Foundation in Coleg Menai, North Wales (2010-1011). Solo Exhibitions include Oak and Iron, New Glasgow Society, Glasgow (2015); Oak and Iron, The Art Shed Collective, Edinburgh (2015); Theo Shields, Generator Projects, Dundee (2015); The Coast Festival of Art, Banf (2015); Pure Response, The Hold Artspace, Brisbane (2013); Finite, Web Space Gallery, Brisbane (2013).
