Made from black clay, fired three times with the final firing adding a platinum lustre to bring out the detail of this textured pot.

A slab pot with thrown chimney, the Colliery Pots I make represent the mining history of the local area, with the platinum representing the wealth of minerals below the ground in this beautiful west coast land.

But the platinum also represents the affluence of the clients that bought Pembrokeshire coal. Queen Victoria insisted her coal came from the harbour local to my studio and gallery as it was smokeless and provided the greatest warmth.

It is rare to find a piece of ceramic work that ties itself so clearly to the roots of its production, yet presents a dramatic and contemporary piece of art.

A British ceramic artist and studio potter based in Pembrokeshire on the west coast of Wales, United Kingdom. Richard's work is influenced by the stunning coastal setting of his studio and the connection to its industrial past. Some of Richard's work has been described as abstract impressionism using ceramics as his vehicle to evoke a feeling or essence of what exists in his coastal environment. Whereas some work pushes the boundaries into pop art and pop ceramics. Richard has a genuine interest in architecture and this is reflected in the strong forms he creates with clay.
