Cube series - "Cube 5" Sculpture

Wheel & Hand work altered clay with wall putty and paint. It intrigues me to express the process of form formation. The formation, movement and variability that is reflected in the finished sculpture; as a working material, the ceramic material I work with is an organic, fascinating and contrast containing material: it is basically plastic and soft and by combustion processes changes chemically and physically and becomes solid. The challenge in my work is to give expression to the inner forces of softness and flow that emanate from the walls of the "rigid" cube. The work on display is part of a series of a transformational evolutionary nature that sets each of the series apart. At the same time each series, as well as each work, is independent, and contains an expression of my study of movement in the body in the mind and in the spirit, a study that reflects the movements during their formation. The first works were created in porcelain; I created abstract organic bodies in search of intuitive movement and the way to preserve it even in the solidifying material while digging, opening, removing layers, disassembly and assembly, formal effects that are manifested at this stage and are related to the Mediterranean world (creatures and landscapes of the water depth and the beach). Later I turned to working on walls and the same spontaneous movement forms erupted from the wall or from panels that resembled wall surfaces. The wall actually defined a boundary and interior and exterior areas, overlooking until an eruption arising from the hidden depth that is revealed and changes the surface. The effects in this series are related to the rift, eruption, tectonic movement, and the shapes were inspired mostly by desert mountain views on the Syrian-African Rift line. In the third series, a work from which I am presenting to you, I used a cube shape, a basic geometric shape with sharp and clear straight lines very much in contrast to the complex, twisting, sensual movements. In this work they seem to take on a life of their own and take over the cube to the point that they consume it. The choice to leave the material white as it is emphasizing the play of light and shadow. The processes of change also include a change in mass and the viewer's movement: if in the first series (the porcelain sculptures) the viewer was given the opportunity to grasp the works and rotate them with both hands, in the last series the mass and dimensions increased and the viewer is required to move around the work.
