About The Artwork

Bennett’s Cultural Compass Coins series is an open commentary on several major cultural shifts that are currently taking place in Western societies. These shifts are with social concepts that have been firmly established for several thousand years, but are now being called into question. The intent of the work is to evoke an internal dialogue with the viewer through the existence of coins as art. What follows is a list of the comments made through these works for the viewer to consider. • A coin as art makes a statement about the value of art and the art market. • A coin as art opens a conversation about crypto currency and NFT art. • A coin that has been hand-struck, using ancient techniques, is a comment on modern-day monetary systems. • Hand-struck coins call into question concepts of sovereignty and authority to determine value. • A coin as art references art as a medium of exchange. • A coin as art means more people can own objects of art and even carry them instead of displaying them in expected ways. The process for making these pieces follows the ancient method of hand-striking metal blanks (a violent act of creation that requires a very forceful blow from a sledge hammer).

Viewers of my work talk about being fascinated with discovering the hidden knowledge contained in the art. Some spend years connecting the dots and are shocked at how deep the information and references go. Science, History, Culture, Philosophy, Religion- it is all included and tied together with conceptual links that are not commonly known. Each piece explores an idea that goes far beyond the sum of its parts. As an artist, my ultimate goal is for a person to spend a lifetime of discoveries in one of my pieces. The plan is that no matter how deep they dig, they never reach the bottom. In other words, the connections just go on and on. For me, technique, style, and media are tools for communication. A song written on a piano will sound different if played on a guitar. An accomplished musician should not be limited to a single instrument and neither should an artist be limited to a certain style. All the styles from the history of Art are in our visual vocabulary and they contain meaning. The varied use of style as a means of communication frees the expression of the Modernist restrictions.
