This series is called 'The Seed Pod Collection'. They are´time capsules of life´, portraying the beginning and end of the life cycle of plants and microorganisms in nature. Using the vessel as a sculptural form of expression, they draw inspiration from cymatics, microscopic imagery of seed pods, pollen, and micro-organisms. Concepts are drawn from a branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings, in reference to the human condition. This work addresses current affair issues such as sociopolitical ecology, environmental conservation, and climate change. These pieces are entirely handbuilt with my own porcelain clay recipe, using slab-building and coiling techniques which I've been developing since 2004. The texture is created in tiny little individual elements, which are added one-by one to gradually build up the surface texture. They are made within humidity chambers to control the drying process. The making, drying, and firing process is extremely slow and it can take 5-8 months to create the large pieces. They are oxidation fired to 1260°C.
