DISTAFF Sculpture

This art object is inspired by traditional Slavic distaff, in particular the well-known Gyazovets distaff with their unique wedge-shaped carving. Gyazovets distaff use traditional ornament elements such as flowers, leaves, and animals that have evolved from ancient pagan times to the 19th century. This work should be considered from several perspectives: the material of the base, its form, and ornament. The material used to create the object has an organic structure emphasized by the texture of burnt wood. The form has a natural asymmetry and unpredictability, adding an element of randomness and naturalness, while the ancient Slavic ornament adds cultural context to the artwork. This work reflects the importance of preserving traditional culture and art, and at the same time, they rethink them in terms of a modern artistic approach.
