ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I'd like to share with others the idea that ordinary materials such as wrapping string can be stripped of their utilitarian connotations and take on new meaning when presented in a different context. The circles are the symbolic of cycles and recycling. As I'm currently working on Environmental Art, I'm drawn to those less noble and discarded materials which we tend to overlook. If we are to reconnect to our surroundings it's essential to consider all materials as worthy of attention and consideration. The best way for me to showcase this by creating a wall based sculpture.

I’m a visual artist and lecturer on Environmental Art. In my work I’m currently exploring the aesthetics of organic fibre and refuse synthetic fibre. Conducting workshops and lectures on Art and Environment to environmental science students I was naturally led to consider 'junk' materials as something to celebrate and to showcase these for their inherent virtues beyond mere usefulness. I hope to share with the viewer the beauty of bonding with materials we tend to disregard and foster an organic aesthetic. I’m fascinated by the juxtaposition of junk synthetic produce bags with sisal wrapping string. By this I’m marvelled at how a parallel ecology comes to the foreground. Recycling junk for the mere sake of recycling is not enough. I strongly feel that praising matter for its own sake is more fulfilling, and art is the best way of looking at discarded materials as a resource for creation. In considering environmental issues it's important to me to reconnect to our surroundings: the material world is the springboard of evolution, where I can enact the attempt to “love matter as myself”. As I shape matter, I myself am being shaped. The style is abstract and yet tactile. I like the materiality of humble materials.
