Despair is one of a series I think of as "State of mind".
This piece is worked in crank clay, and after firing, patinated with various polishes and stains.
The piece is heavily scored to accentuate the emotion of deep thought and sadness

About The Artwork

I am inspired by old works of art, for which I have a great admiration. Despair is one of a series I think of as "State of mind". It represents the strength of emotions some of us suffer. I hope to inspire empathy, and thought about others suffering. I chose clay to make this sculpture, as it is so malleable to one's touch, for texture and expression. I hope to have created my own style in Sculpture and Artwork. A video of this work amongst others can be viewed here: https://www.facebook.com/JanMcPartlandArt/videos/178899414122818 This piece is worked in crank clay, and after firing, patinated with various polishes and stains. I was born in Shoreditch, London some 50 years before it became the global centre of art it is today. My story is that of the area: I grew up in a working-class house, left school aged 15 and saw my artistic impulses frustrated by the vagaries of everyday life: first working my way up in the world of hair and beauty, owning a business aged 18, and then marrying and having children. In my fifties, with my children all having studied at university, I took the chance to devote time to my art in a way I had never been able to before. I channelled much of what I had learned and experienced in the prior decades, creating works themed around what it means to be a woman, a wife, a mother and an artist.
