About The Artwork

There has to be some mystery in making a face out of clay. Sleeping face. Where do we go when we sleep and dream? A dream always consists of fabulous incredible changes. The mystery of sleep has attracted inquisitive minds from ancient times to the present days. In my ceramic masks, I focus on the metamorphoses of sleep that take place in the world of Morpheus, the god of sleep, who is associated with the world of our dreams. In each mask there is something from Morpheus himself, from his endless transformations and reincarnations. The process of making a mask is very introspective and meditative. It creates a calming effect, you can sense your thoughts, heartbeat and breathing. It is a real engagement with material and touch. Inspired by the world around me, I have incorporated my worries and hopes for the future of this world in my artworks. I hope for the awakening in people of real humanism, kindness and compassion for human beings like us. The mask is fired twice in the kiln, painted with underglaze high quality pigments, covered with matte glaze and fixed on a wooden base. The wooden base is glued with canvas, primed and painted with acrylic. Ready to hang.

Contemporary Austrian artist of Russian origin, Elena Vostryakova works with themes such as beauty, femininity, movement, the environment and the power of nature. She embodies her ideas through painting, collages of old painted paper and found objects, clay sculptures. As the daughter of an artist but self-taught, she seeks spontaneous, intuitive work, free from the intrusion of criticism and control. Her works are characterized by expressive lines and shapes, influenced by different cultures, and the combination of figurative and abstract elements. Elena always pays homage to her muse, Creative Wise Nature, by mixing shapes and materials and finding new uses for them. Her greatest achievements in art have come from a source of intuition and self-education, guided by inspirations from the natural world.
