ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A castrated rooster is called a 'capon". In this cruel and (fortunately) largely outdated process, the rooster is dramatically altered so that he no longer exhibits classic rooster behavior. This little sculpture evokes the idea of a de-masculated rooster yet at the same time presents a proud and regal figure. The head appeared to have been lopped off .. implying the cruel fate of many chickens, yet it is exchanged with another animal head. As with many of my sculptures, the combination of various hybrid elements is intended to evoke questions and discussion about our complex and often contradictory relationship with other animals

Claude Jones is a New Zealand-born artist, whose work explores the complex relationship between humans, animals, and the natural world. Jones’s sculptures are curious crossbreeds of animal, human and plant, evoking the fantasy realm of children’s books, but with a sombre twist. Her use of narrative, irony and symbolism, invites viewers to re-evaluate their relationship with nature, and in particular, with other animals. With an art career spanning over 15 years, Claude Jones has exhibited widely. She has been the recipient of several awards, grants and scholarships, including 10 international artist residencies. Jones’s artworks are represented in public and private collections around the world. Claude Jones is a plant-eating pacifist who passionately believes in the emancipation of all innocent beings. Her artwork reflects this philosophy.
