Born in Southend-on-sea in 1959 , John left school in his teens and became an apprentice metal fabricator in a small family firm , a job which quickly became a career , and eventually a life-long passion . John was fortunate to work alongside craftsmen who had been metal workers for over 50 years , and by his late twenties he'd developed an exceptionally wide range of skills. After moving to Devon in the 80's he started his own business , offering a made-to-order service in non-ferrous structures . Specialising in the design , production and installation of temperature and corrosion resistant products for industry , his company grew rapidly and by 2003 he was able to sell it in order to give free reign to his artistic ambitions . John was now in a position to realise a long felt want and move to the south of France where his deep appreciation of art and crafts found its expression in wood and stone . After a number of years living in France , and with many exciting projects under his belt , John came back to Devon to work again with his first loves.....Steel and iron . His love of the medium he works in remains his fundamental inspiration , along with the soft beauty of Devon's coastline and Dartmoor's rugged landscapes . John's current sculptures range from dramatic sea-birds in rust-streaked found metals , to the beautiful flowing lines of his figurative and abstract pieces in stainless steel .
